I'm new here and to BWing. I don't wear DS all the time as I've really only just found out about it and he is rather large at 22lbs (6mths). I would love to try a woven wrap. I'm thinking of making one which would be cheap but when I read what other people say about them it seems that the big names really are more comfortable. I don't have a lot of money at the moment so I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that may/may not work for us.

Any recommendations?

There is a Yahoo Group: UKBabyWearingSwap (someone will find you a link to it I'm sure - I don't have it anywhere) where you can find mamas who are selling thier slings. It is possible to pick up a bargain there. Also the FSOT forum at www.thebabywearer.com is great for finding pre-loved slings :D

It is perfectly possible to make your own woven wrap sling. If you choose 100% gauze then you could find this quite cheaply in most haberdashery departments. Finding a cheap and suitable Jacquard fabric will prove more difficult I think. I have looked and at the price per meter, you're better off finding a second hand one: Didymos, Storchenweige, or Hoppediz are good.

Merry Carry is a good cheaper option too if you want to buy new.

Andreja at Natural Mothering stocks them and is having a little sale on them too (£33 for 4.9m which is fabulous) I'm actually rather tempted myself (the tiger-eye colourway looks lovely...)

HTH!

*off to drool over the Tiger Eye Merry Carry...*

Thanks moominhannah. Am now stalking both yahoo and TBW FSOT. It's so difficult when I don't know what I want/need.
But the merry carry looks good.
Am now drooling over tiger eye too.
mmm how to persuade DH that this is an actual need.
I'm assuming that I would need a longer wrap to do a good rucksack carry with my babe that would support us both well?

Don't know much about wraps but I like these ones, especially the olive stripe one:

They're quite reasonably priced

For a rucksack you don't need as much fabric as the back wrap cross carry, so you can use 4.6m easily for both, wrapping the excess fabric around your waist. Some people do prefer a shorter wrap for a rucksack so that they don't have that excess material to deal with

Ooh Hannah, you wicked woman! I've just got my new Coorie (mmmmm!) and am waiting for a Girasol in the post, and now this!

Still, it's only the cost of (a rather large) take away, so.......

...maybe jacket potatoes or porridge for dinner tomorrow.....

thanks all for the welcome and the tips.

have fallen for the tiger eye but try as I might can't persuade DH to love it too!! but the take away theory could be the way forward . . .
:D

completely off track - has anyone tried an ergo/beco/yamo type carrier?

Scaryt,

wraps to ergo/beco/yamo /???
That's totally off the track!!! :P
Anyway, I have an ergo. After trying one, I just had to get one. It was so, so comfortable. i thought my dH would use it a lot.
However, after buying it, I used just a couple of times and it is literally collecting dust.
The reasons are

1. I'm not very flexible, so I find it very difficult to use the chest straps when I'm using the front carry. (My DH is even worse when it comes to flexibility.)

2. I don't find it very pretty to use it. It sounds so vains, doesn't it? But that is the sad truth....

3. It doesn't fold up as well as as any other carriers.
I like carrying a couple of slings with me, for example, I'll have a wrap for a long walk but when I get to the destination, I'll either use a RS or a pouch.

Having said that, I know plenty of mamas who are more than happy to use ergo. i think it really depends on the person just like any other slings.

I haven't tried Beco, and never heard of Yamo, so can't give you any opinion on that.

Hope this helps! ;)

I know, I know completely off track but DH took one look at the wraps and said no way so I wondered if something more structured would be more appealing. There just aren't the pennies for mistakes!! I bought a pouch that was too small so I'm worrying about trying somehting else that could be wrong.

I like the look of the yamo but they're quite new so not sure what resale would be like. Here's the site http://www.loopi.co.il/yamo1.html (hope that will be a link) I like the glimpse of the brown with flowers but nowhere seems to sell those. . . so unfair to tempt us like that.

have ordered a beco for dh to "borrow". i was directed to a good comparison on TBW. but despite any logical argument, i fell for the fabrics!
