Ok, I NEED a sturdier carrier as Oz gets bigger. We tried Jin-Hee's Ergo (thanks babe ;)) which worked ok except for I think we would need the toddler version as we couldn't get the hood over Oz's head (the body of the carrier didn't come up far enough up) lol!

Now, what about the Patapum? What are the differences? Which is better for a narrow shouldered mama who prefers crossed straps for a back carry (is this possible?)

I need to get one before our Paris trip really... (Next week)

have a look at Paulus's review of the Ergo and Papatum. Personally I found the Papatum a bit difficult to get the hang of, the way you put it on is different from the Ergo which seems more intuitive. The body is definitely taller than the Ergo though and hence more supportive of a taller kiddo. Reasonably comfy for both of us, I just found it difficult to get on compared with my wraps. I'm not sure what you've tried, are none of your MTs good enough? Have you tried back-wrapping? Personally I find back wrapping to be the best, I love a good comfy BWCC or JBC, especially with something really supportive like a Storch or Hopp, but it depends on what your experience is.
Have fun shopping anyway!

Hanna i have both.. want to meet up so you can try them. The hood on the ergo fits Ethan and he is very long. Staps just need altering.

Hannah - is Jin-Hee's Ergo a new generation? Ergo don't do a toddler version just the one version, but I think that the New gen is taller in the body than the classic (older version)

the Toddle Patapum is taller in the body than the Ergo - but I think that it's more difficult to put on as the childs legs need to go over the shoulder straps that connect to the waist band.

the bECO is taller than both the New gen Ergo and the Patapum and I think that it's very comfy - I've tried all three. The Toddle patapum was a pain to get one but was comfy, the New gen Ergo is comfy but the shoulder straps do irritate me under my arms. The bECO does this to a lesser extent as the fabric is softer and not so padded. I have to wear all of them low on my hips as otherwise the shoulder straps are too long for me. Guess that might be a problem for you too.

Also I don't cross any over my chest - as I usually do with a MT. I don't bother as it's a pain to unclip them, as just bringing them up over Will is so quick and easy, I use the chest straps - which can dig in sometimes. The Ergo and bECO have clips though which would make it easier to cross the straps.

The bECO doesn't have as much waist padding (or hip padding in my case!) as the Ergo or Patapum but I find it fine to wear.

Obvious disadvantages with all 3 is that going to the toilet is a pain as the waistband is so low.

Anyway I'll bring the bECO on Monday (but it might be a bit late for your Paris trip - although Bigmama has them in stock)

We use it all the time at the moment as DS really likes it and it's do easy up and down with him, I can also leave it on while he's walking etc.

Hannah, the ergo fits Ben so it must fit Oz!
The hood is fine for Ben too, you can't have had it adjusted properly???????

yep forgot to mention the hoods!

just tried the Ergo hood with Meg and she fitted fine :)

did you have the hood adjuster straps at their full length?

It even fits Noel ;)
Ergo NG is best i think. But as someone mentioned, it is possible it is to big for very short and slim people but i think you are average tall so it should be ok.
Its not possible to cross the straps but they are easy to adjust both in front and on back and also quick up and down if u are bf in it.
Patapum is almost like ergo but looks simpler and is a little more complicated to put on.
Beco u can cross the straps but the padding might be to short... And its a pain to adjust it up and down when u are wearing on front.
Try ergo again i suggest! The NG.

Thanks so much for all your replies!

Guess what? I think we'll be **wrapping** this Paris trip (shock!)

We went out for a long walk with Oz in my rainbow Girasol (BWCC - THANKYOU Jin-Hee). We had a couple of ins and outs and ups and downs whilst Oz decided whether to walk or "Bak Cawy" (it's how he says it lol!) and I was fine wrapping in public, without a mirror, without Kai and Jin-hee helping us, without anyone helping us infact. :D :D :D

We were both V V comfy, and I feel much more confident.

We went straight from stretchy wrap and pouch when Oz was 4-5 months to Mei-Ties without ever trying a woven wrap until Anne helped me with a Calin Bleu Gauze this summer and I WISH I'd checked out wovens sooner. Learning to back carry in a woven wrap with a wrigglesome HEAVY toddler is hard.

I'm very glad that Kai is so personable so I could get some practise in lol!

Anyway, thanks again I think we're sorted - ooh I feel like buying a new wrap to celebrate (I probably shouldn't though...)

I know what you mean about getting a new wrap.
Can you believe I don't have a woven wrap? 8o
I'm gonna get one. Don't think I can get one before Paris trip but we shall see. ;)

i can't believe you guys don't have any wraps (JinHee and Hannah) - I have wraps coming out of my ears. Unfortunately probably none that Hannah needs.

Hannah - you NEED either a Didy Stripes or a Storchenweige - get them cheap off German Ebay. They're the most supportive, really - i have now tried just about everything. Unfortunately I've decided (as i still have a small baby) that i like every other kind better and have sold off my stripes and i don't like Storchenweiges (too thick). But with Oz being older, those two are the ones to go for. Girasols are definitely not as supportive and sometimes get funny loose bits when wrapping.

Btw - did you try the New v2.2 patapums? they're cool for up-and-downs because you can roll the whole carrier and button it round your waist eg. when Oz wants to walk. Very supportive waist, but can't even sit down, let alone go to toilet. We used one to walk around Germany recently.

I had a Didy stripes (Eva) but sold it as it was too girly for me! We LOVE our Inka Storch, but use it for hip carries (it's a 3.6). I have my eye on another Didy and a Hoppediz :D

I haven't found that problem with our Girasol ?(

I've not tried a Patapum - but hopefully someone will bring one to the next NINO meeting... I'm fairly sure we'll find the need for a structured carrier at some point even with my new back wrapping confidence :P

Hun,
I have wraps just not wooven ones. :P I just didn't feel any need to have a wooven wrap until now. (It's getting chilly now.) In summer, I didn't want to even go near any thing thick. Will get one soon, though. Do not worry. :P

Get a Hopp! Lovely and thick for winter, nice and snuggly for carrying a heavy toddler, I LOVE mine! And the pocket is fab! You'd look lovely in a Panama I reckon.

I know - you have GM's coming out of your ears! ;)

I know exactly what you mean about hot weather, right now my BBB is getting so much use, it's about to have a breakdown.
